COOLAH
Population: 889;
367 NW of Sydney.
Coolah is situated in the
midst of some beautiful country, in the foothills of the Great
Dividing and Warrumbungle Ranges.
The Black Stump wine
saloon stood on the road to the north (to Gunnedah) and local people
are adamant it has the best claim to being the origin of the saying
'beyond the black stump’. Fire destroyed the inn in 1908.but the
folklore lingers. Grazing country inland was marked on official
documents as 'beyond’, strengthening the claim. Attractive local
sandstone is used in several buildings, including St. Andrews Church.
The road to the east leads to Pandoras Pass, which Alan Cunningham
crossed in 1823 to discover the southern way to the Liverpool Plains.
A plaque marks his campsite. The pass road also leads to the Coolah
Tops National Park and Norfolk Falls.
